Members of the CSCQBE GCE/EFA Sub-committee have been meeting to plan for 2009 GCE Week of Action for Malawi.

The first meeting was held Action Aid International (Malawi) on 19 February 2009

The main purpose of meeting was to do a post-mortem for 2008 GCE Week of Action besides planning for 2009 GCE Week of Action.

The following were some of the resolutions agreed at the first meeting:

  • Need to start GCE Week of Action preparations early
  • Need to select a venue where there is a DEN. They resolved to conduct the National Launch in the Central region, either in Mchinji or Dowa but the venue was to be decided by statistics of illiteracy levels. Mr Limuwa from the CSCQBE Secretariat would get the statistics from National Adult Literacy Center for Mchinji and Dowa
  • Members resolved to conduct national and district workshops after the national launch as they promote more participation. The workshops will be a platform for government officials, teachers, politicians, teachers, students and the illiterates.

The Secretariat reported to the committee that it had developed a proposal to seek funds to support the Week of Action activities. Members reviewed the proposal against the budget

Among other things, members agreed the following activities during the GCE event:

  1. A press conference prior to the launch
  2. Production and airing of TV documentary featuring adult and youth literacy issues. Mr Kayange of CRIDOC and Mrs Kamkwesa of HRCC would review the documentaries once produced
  3. District activities to follow up the national launch

The follow-up meeting was held on 12 March, 2009 at the HRCC Secretriat.

The following were some of the resolutions agreed at the meeting:

  • The venue was confirmed to be in Mchinji District
  • TANARD was mandated to coordinate selection of the actual venue in Mchinji, and to mobilise support within the district
