CONCEPT SUMMARY FOUR (4):
Protecting Children’s Rights in the Information Society

PROJECT SUMMARY AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES

Overall Goal

The overall goal of the project is to increase the awareness of students, teachers, parents and library workers in the field of child rights in the Information Society.

Project Description

It is a well-known fact taht the transition to information society has not only positive sides and impact. Many of the negative effects of this transition concern to a high extent the children who are among the most active users of Internet. As a consequence, many organisations around the world have embarked on campaigns to make Information Technologies (IT), particularly the Internet, safe for children and young people everywhere. And in Malawi, CRIDOC internds to join such a movement.

For example, according to the Make-IT-Safe, a global movement aiming to get the IT industry and governments to take responsibility for making online and interactive technologies safe for children and young people, children and young people are leading users of the internet, chat rooms, web cams, peer2peer, mobile phones and electronic games - at home, at school, at internet cafés, everywhere.

Unfortunately, t hese technologies bring great benefits, and great risks – risks of sexual exploitation and child pornography, and exposure to sexual predators as well as to damaging images or messages.

Even though some IT companies and governments are working to protect children and young people online, but it’s not enough! The proof is there every day in our courts, the news and in thousands upon thousands of injured children. That must change.

This project therefore aims to enhance awareness of students, teachers, Internet Cefe owners and parents on the risks and threats to the security of children in the net, on the ways to protect children from harmful and illegal content and on crimes and abuses in the Internet.
